During an outdoor Mass Sept. 9 marking the 70th anniversary of the Soldiers’ Shrine in Holdingford, Father Gregory Mastey asked people to stand in recognition of those who had served in the military or their families.

 

When he asked worshipers to speak the names of soldiers currently serving, or say a silent prayer for those who had died while in service, it was an emotional moment of reflection.

Several locally produced videos are hitting the web with the hope of reaching a broader audience regarding Catholic teaching on marriage.

 

“Our goal is to use multiple avenues to convey a consistent message in a respectful way,” said Father Tom Knoblach, co-coordinator of the marriage amendment initiative in the St. Cloud Diocese. “We are trying to be understanding of the struggle that people may have with this issue and try present a message as positive as we can.”

A new fund is growing through The Catholic Foundation to help women discerning religious life leap over financial hurdles.

 

It could be used “if they need money to go to a retreat or for transportation to a retreat or if they want to visit a motherhouse or sometimes there’s a dowry they have to pay,” said Dave Pullis, founder of the fund and member of Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Rockville.

Reaching through a silver gate, Loren Heinze and his children, Evelyn and Mathias, felt the soft fur of a baby calf.

 

Nearby, under blue skies and sunshine, a group of girls giggled as they “turned themselves around” to the Hokey Pokey music of the Chmielewski polka band. Adults smiled as they socialized around tables and finished their pulled pork sandwiches, corn on the cob, ice cream and homemade cookies.

In all, about 650 people from around the St. Cloud Diocese dotted the Kevin and Gail Goeden farm site near Wadena for the Aug. 19 Rural Life Celebration.

Kevin Hartigan says Catholic Relief Services is partnering with church agencies to provide food, medical and other assistance to war victims

Kevin Hartigan is Catholic Relief Services’ regional director for Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia. His work includes overseeing programs to assist refugees from Syria, where a civil war that began in early 2011 has so far claimed an estimated 20,000 lives. The fighting has displaced some 1.5 million Syrians from their homes, and more than 250,000 have fled to neighboring countries, including Lebanon and Jordan, where CRS is helping to meet their needs.
