The Mission

We, the people of God of the Diocese of Saint Cloud, in union with the Universal Church,
believe in and proclaim the presence of Jesus Christ in our world.

Our mission is to be His heart of mercy,
voice of hope, and hands of justice.

A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP NEARY

The Vision

“I believe that this process will surely give birth to an even more dynamic diocese, reenergized and more focused on knowing Christ on the deepest level.
Together, with God’s promise, we will make all things new by honoring the past and inspiring the future.”

– Bishop Patrick Neary, C.S.C.

Guiding Change
Document

The guiding change document is a framework to assist in moving from the current reality to what ought to be. With consultation of several groups – clergy, diocesan pastoral team, diocesan planning council – the guiding change document was created, adjusted and edited based on input and feedback from these groups.

Planning Timeline

2015 – Task Force Created

In 2015 a task force was created to look at ways to serve parishes with the diminishing numbers of priests in the Diocese of Saint Cloud. The planning council began the task of creating a process for broad consultation including priests, representatives from parishes and schools, diocesan curia and parishioners to envision the future of diocesan configuration.

2018 – Visioning Phase

In 2018, 12 priests were preparing to retire with no replacements available within the next five years.  Under the leadership of Bishop Donald Kettler and Brenda Kresky, diocesan director of planning, and in collaboration with the Diocesan Planning Council, a plan was developed to share resources and invite intentional collaboration within groupings of between 2-8 parishes.

2019-20 – Development Phase

In 2019, Bishop Kettler announced the formation of 29 Area Catholic Communities. Each ACC was asked to create an action plan for ACC collaboration and sharing resources by Dec. 31, 2019. The plans were reviewed and approved by Bishop Kettler, who then instituted further requirements for a joint bulletin and ACC council.

2023 – Bishop Neary Ordained

Bishop Kettler officially entered retirement in February 2023 when Bishop Patrick Neary, CSC, was installed as the 10th bishop of St. Cloud. Since that time, Bishop Neary has consulted with the planning office and the planning council. Sparked in part by the Synod on Synodality, a listening phase was developed.

2023-24 – Listening Phase

In collaboration with the Bridge Builders for a Thriving Mission grant, the 29 ACCs were invited to prepare a presentation at St. Mary’s Cathedral and present it to the bishop. As part of the listening process, participants gathered to listen to one another, share concerns of their ACC and discuss joys and challenges. The summary report is available on the diocesan website.

April 2024 – Evaluation Phase

Emmaus Partners, a consultative company, was hired to collate data and provide a Current Reality report and a Guiding Change document. These documents provide a foundation for the necessity for change and what we hope to accomplish for the mission of the Diocese of Saint Cloud.

October 2024 – Resource Development/Formation Phase

This phase is marked by designing common parameters to ensure consistency in planning and expectations across the diocese while allowing local flexibility. Resources will also be prepared to assist ACCs in making data-informed and mission-informed decisions.

December 2024 – All Things New Launch

In an effort to effectively communicate our pastoral planning initiative “All Things New: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future,” is launched. As we journey together toward revitalizing and reimagining our faith communities, consistent communication will help ensure updates are shared with everyone, including clergy and leadership. Together we can discern God’s will for our Church in the Diocese of St. Cloud and work collectively to bring about the renewal and growth that “All Things New” envisions.

July 2025 – Local Planning Phase

Each ACC will develop a plan, based on common parameters set by the bishop, and present it to diocesan leadership for support and approval. Draft due by Dec. 31, 2025.

January 2026 – Implementation Phase Begins

ACCs begin implementing the changes outlined in the approved plans. Length and timing may vary from ACC to ACC based on local circumstances.

Prayer for All Things New

Ever-present God,
just as you accompanied our biblical ancestors,
so, too, you accompanied our ancestors
who came to Central Minnesota generations ago
to begin a new life and set down
their roots of faith in our churches.
Be with us now as we, the people of the Diocese of St. Cloud,
embark on a new, uncharted journey,
heeding your call for renewal and transformation.
Send forth your gifts of
courage, compassion, trust and collaboration.
Help us discern the best ways
we can fulfill your call to missionary discipleship
with vibrant communities and effective ministries.
Open our hearts to the stirrings of the Holy Spirit
and give us the grace we need for this journey
as you make all things new.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
with the intercession of Mary, our Mother,
and St. Cloud, our patron. AMEN.
